March 7-9: Lakeshore West Service Adjustment

On March 8 and 9, there will be no GO train service between Oakville and West Harbour GO due to construction.

Niagara GO train service will run between Niagara Falls and Aldershot GO stations. GO buses will run between Aldershot and Oakville GO stations. Our regular GO train service has been adjusted to run between Oakville GO and Union Station. NOTE: On the weekend, there will be no GO Transit service at Appleby and Bronte GO stations.

Some trains will depart Oakville GO one minute earlier than regularly scheduled. GO bus connection times will vary, and some Niagara Falls GO trains will depart earlier or up to 10 minutes later than regularly scheduled. Please plan your trip before travelling

During this construction work:

Metrolinx’s GO Expansion program is delivering more GO service across the network, including the capacity to deliver service every 15 minutes or better on core routes like the Lakeshore West line.  With more than $12 billion spent on improvements to date, the GO Expansion program is making exciting progress and transforming our transit network for generations to come.

 Drury Lane Pedestrian Bridge

To support future increases in GO rail service, Metrolinx is working with the City of Burlington to replace and enhance the Drury Lane Pedestrian Bridge, which is nearing the end of its service life.

The upgrades to the Drury Lane Pedestrian Bridge will provide a number of benefits to GO customers and the local community including:

  • Improved pedestrian access
  • Making the bridge AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act) compliant
  • Allowing Metrolinx to provide more frequent and faster train service
  • Permitting for the future electrification of the rail corridor

 Burloak Grade Separation

To support the increase in GO service, Metrolinx is working with the City of Burlington and the Town of Oakville to build the Burloak Drive grade separation which will improve traffic flow without having to wait for trains to pass.

The new train bridge, known as a grade separation, will deliver several key benefits for both Oakville and Burlington:

  • Reduce congestion and delays, as vehicles will no longer have to wait for trains to pass.
  • Increase safety for GO train passengers, pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles by separating a high-traffic roadway and a busy rail line.
  • Widen Burloak Drive, creating space for on-street bicycle lanes, multi-use path on both sides of the road, and the possibility to expand from four to six vehicle lanes in the future.
  • Widen the intersection and roadway at Superior Court and Prince William Drive, and minor widening improvements at Harvester and Wyecroft roads.

Boreholes

As part of investigative work for the GO Expansion project, crews will be drilling vertical boreholes to assess ground conditions within the Lakeshore West rail corridor. This work will support future track and infrastructure updates.

A drill rig is used to perform investigative works by rotating and pushing a drill head into the ground to a desired depth and to retrieve soil samples for analysis. Boreholes can be six to eight inches in diameter and over ten metres in depth. Underground utilities must be identified and located before borehole drilling can begin.

Gathering data on things like soil type, texture, structure, density and absorbency is a critical step when it comes to the design and construction for structural foundations.

As different ground conditions can sometimes require different construction approaches, soil samples need to be collected and examined before construction work can begin.

That’s exactly what’s happening now as part of next steps for GO Expansion – the program that will ultimately add more, faster GO train service across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton region.
