GTS Toolkit

Welcome to the GTS Toolkit – an online resource that will help you better understand the scope and complexity of the Georgetown South Project. This toolkit is designed to help you become more knowledgeable about the construction methods and equipment we are using to complete the project. You can learn more about the work we will be doing in your neighbourhood by reading about what you can expect to see on site and read the definitions of the terms and phrases we use in our communications.

This toolkit is by no means complete. As we build our corridor, so too will we build our toolkit, adding new terms, equipment and activities as we move further along with the project.

Construction 101
Construction 101 is a series of short videos meant to help you understand the various elements of construction. Click on a video to learn more.

The GTS Toolkit has been divided into the following of sections:

Glossary View online
We have put together a glossary of terms and phrases regularly used in construction and – more specifically – in rail projects such as ours. This will help our neighbours better understand what we are doing as we build in the rail corridor. Our glossary will help explain what we mean when we refer to a "Diamond Crossing", talk about a "flagperson" or write about the benefits of a "pre-construction condition survey".

Project Life Cycle View online
Every project has a beginning, middle and end – in other words, it has a life cycle. From its very beginning, a project follows a series of steps from the conceptual stage (Can it be done? What are the impacts of this project?) to its design (What does it look like? What materials will be used?) to the actual construction when we break ground and begin building. This section explains the various stages of a project.

What's Happening on Site View online
Wondering what is involved in each phase of construction? Want to understand how a utility relocation is done, or how a new bridge span is built? This section of the toolkit breaks down the various construction activities we will be completing for the Georgetown South Project.

What's Working on Site View online
A large scale rail expansion such as the GTS Project involves a variety of construction activities, each of which requires various tools and construction equipment. From augers to water trucks, this section will provide you with information about what is working on site. We will talk about how the each piece of equipment works, what it is used for and even show you some photos so you will recognize the equipment when you see it.
